Activity 6

Healthy Foods Target Game

Materials needed: healthy foods paper/rag balls* (2 balls per player), shoe boxes (1 per player to be used as ‘baskets’)
*Your parents can help you in making the paper/rag balls (see Notes to Parents). Before playing the game make at least 2 healthy foods paper/rag balls for each player.
You will need at least one more person (brother, sister, mother, father, cousin) to play this game.
Each player will have two healthy paper/rag balls.
You will also need one shoe box (basket) for each player.
Your parents can be the ‘referee’.
How to Play?
1. Both players stand behind a line (starting line) facing shoe boxes placed 3 metres away (as in Figure 1).
2. When the referee gives the signal to start, throw the healthy food ball in the ‘basket’, one at a time.
3. If the ball does not go in the ‘basket’ or falls out, run to collect it, return behind the starting line and try again. The first player to put both balls in his/her basket is the winner.
4. Repeat the activity with the basket placed 4 metres away from the starting line.
You can also play the game using different types of throws (overhead, underarm, between the legs) to make it more interesting.
NOTE to Parents

Making of paper/rag balls:

Use old newspapers or brochures to make tennis ball size paper balls. Crush the paper to make it round shaped. You may use elastic bands or adhesive tape to hold the ball in its ball shape. Cut healthy food items from supermarket brochures and paste one healthy food item on each ball. Let the glue dry out for about 30 mins.

Old pieces of fabric or clothing may also be used to make the balls (rag balls). Wrap the pieces of fabric in layers to make a tennis size balls. Use elastic bands or adhesive tape to hold the fabric together. Use glue to paste one healthy food item on the ball.

You should make two balls for each player.
